The history of the Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 to produce the Canadian currency, which had previously been minted by the Royal Mint in London since 1858. The growth of Canada as a nation and the discovery of gold and other precious metals in the Yukon Territory necessitated the establishment of a local mint. For nearly 70 years, the Royal Canadian Mint operated exclusively from its original Ottawa facility. In 1976, a second location was opened in Winnipeg to increase capacity.
When was the 1/2 ounce Maple Leaf Gold first minted?
The 1/2 oz Maple Leaf gold coin was first introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1986 as part of the popular Canadian Maple Leaf coin series. As the second oldest gold bullion coin in the world after South Africa's Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf series has become a fixture among investors and collectors around the world. The Maple Leaf 1/2 ounce gold has a face value of 20 Canadian dollars and was minted in 99.99% pure gold, a purity that was considered a technical sensation at the time.
The Maple Leaf Gold series was originally introduced in 1979 with the legendary 1oz Maple Leaf Gold coin. The Royal Canadian Mint then expanded the series to include additional weight classes such as 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce Maple Leaf coins in 1982 and finally in 1986 the 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf was launched. The introduction of the 1/2 ounce coin allowed for greater flexibility in investment options and also provided an easier entry point for investors.
